Barcelona’s hopes of securing a domestic double this season were shattered when they suffered a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Real Madrid. The margin of the defeat meant Real Madrid advanced to the final of the Copa Del Rey, at the expense of their arch-rivals.
Having secured three back-to-back wins against Real Madrid since the turn of the year, the loss was understandably disappointing.
However, head coach Xavi Hernandez took no time mourning the loss and motivated his team right after the result.
“I perfectly understand your anger because I am also angry. We had them in the first half, but then after 0-2 we got messy,” Xavi said (h/t Diario AS) in the dressing room yesterday.
“Now is the time to get up, there’s no time for regret, aware that we are having a great season and that winning La Liga is the ultimate price. A title that would make us touch glory and for which we have fought since day one,” he added.
Just before the game, Xavi had reportedly twisted Carlo Ancelotti’s motivational words to the Real Madrid players and used them to boost the confidence of his own players. But with key players out injured, the Catalans simply could not contain Los Blancos.
Having been knocked out in all cup competitions this season, Barcelona only have La Liga to play for during the remainder of the campaign. With a 12 point lead at the top, there are not many who would bet against Barça to win the league title.
The Catalans’ next match is up against Girona, before they take on Getafe – a match where both Pedri and Frenkie de Jong may make their highly anticipated returns.
