Plan C: Barcelona planning a six-month renewal for club captain until December 2023

Sergio Busquets’ future at Barcelona has been dominating the headlines for a while now. The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is tipped to leave when that happens, with a move to Inter Miami being speculated.

However, manager Xavi Hernandez is a huge admirer of his captain and is keen on prolonging his stay at the club for at least another season. Reports suggested that the head coach will make one final attempt to convince Busquets to remain at the club, but it would be difficult.

That is because Busquets has made up his mind about wanting to leave Spotify Camp Nou. In fact, the former Spanish international had decided to leave in January itself but will stay until the end of the season at the manager’s behest.

However, according to the latest reports from journalist Toni Juanmarti, a third option has emerged with regard to Busquets and his future. Indeed, Barcelona are planning to offer him a short-term six-month contract that will keep him at the club until December 2023.

The same news is also being reported by Alfredo Martinez as well, who claims that Barcelona want to meet with Busquets soon in order to discuss his future and reach a definitive solution on the matter.

Busquets’ wanting to leave Barcelona in January had to do with the pre-season beginning in the MLS next month before the start of the season in February.

But with that unlikely to be an option, the club will consider extending his stay until December 2023, so that he can join Inter Miami ahead of the 2024 season in the MLS.

Such a move would allow Barcelona more leeway in terms of taking their time to identify and sign their desired replacement for Busquets. At the same time, it would also help the club improve their Financial Fair Play situation, which would make their efforts to sign a new player easier.

It remains to be seen if Busquets is willing to consider such a proposal from the Blaugrana or decides to move on when the current season is over
