A few weeks ago, Ilkay Gundogan had emerged as an appealing option for FC Barcelona in their quest to reinforce the midfield department.
The German international, currently plying his trade with Manchester City, was identified as the ideal player to complement the Barça midfield consisting of youngsters such as Pedri and Gavi.
What made Gundogan an appealing target for Barcelona was his expiring contract at Manchester City. He was also seen as a superior option due to his experience and technical qualities, with Xavi even considering him as a potential replacement for Sergio Busquets.
However, Barcelona are not expected to make a move for Gundogan and are ready to move on, reports SPORT. The Catalans have considered many options in the market already, with Gundogan likely to be sidelined due to multiple factors.
A primary concern for the Blaugrana is his age profile. At 32, Gundogan is entering the final phase of his career and an investment on the German international, therefore, could have proven to be a risky option.
Moreover, Pep Guardiola has been actively trying to convince Gundogan to extend his contract at Etihad Stadium. Although Manchester City will not stand in the way of the midfielder if he wants to join Barça, it appears he is likely to prolong his stay at the club.
With that in mind, Barcelona are set to move on from the former Borussia Dortmund starlet. Fortunately for them, they have no shortage of options, with Xavi considering end-season moves for players such as Martin Zubimendi.
Ruben Neves was also mooted as an option for the Catalans, although the club are reportedly favouring a move for Zubimendi due to his exposure to Spanish football.
