Barcelona veteran to remain at Camp Nou until the end of the season on Xavi’s demand

A recent report from Diario SPORT has offered an update on the future of Sergio Busquets. The Barcelona midfielder’s future has been a point of contention lately, with many expecting him to depart in the upcoming January transfer window.

Busquets himself wanted to leave the club in the winter market, in favour of a move to Major League Soccer. His current contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season

But as per the report, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has convinced Busquets to remain at Camp Nou for six more months. He wants him to fulfil his contract as he considers the veteran a vital player for Barça despite his topsy-turvy performances this term.

With 696 competitive appearances to his name, Busquets is one of the most experienced players at Barcelona right now. Along with his experience, the Spaniard provides leadership and composure that often proves to be vital, especially in a team with so much young talent.

Xavi, therefore, wants Busquets to continue at Camp Nou at least until the end of the season. The Barcelona coach even wanted the veteran to continue playing for the club beyond 2023, but that doesn’t appear to be a possibility anymore.

As such, a stay until the end of the season seems likely. Even though Busquets’ January departure may significantly benefit the club from a financial perspective, the Blaugrana simply do not want to get rid of the player just yet.

The midfielder and Barcelona share an excellent relationship as well, so it will not come as a surprise to see the player hold off his plans to depart Camp Nou in January.

Busquets had recently made headlines by announcing his retirement from international football, shortly after Spain’s shocking exit in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.
