Xavi not expecting any new signings at Barcelona in January

With the January transfer window less than a month away, a lot has been speculated about what Barcelona will be doing during that period.

Last January was a busy one at Camp Nou as the Blaugrana brought in players like Ferran Torres, Adama Traore (loan) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And if reports are to be believed, there are plans to reinforce the right-back slot and the midfield department this time out.

However, once again, the Catalans have been struck down by Financial Fair Play issues which could limit their spending power or completely stop them from signing anyone.

And, according to fresh reports from journalist Santi Ovalle, manager Xavi Hernandez, at the moment, is working with the idea that Barcelona will be unable to bring in any new faces in the upcoming transfer window.

As iterated earlier, a right-back is said to be a top priority for Barça heading into January. Hector Bellerin has flattered to deceive since joining in the summer, forcing Xavi to utilise the likes of Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo and even Alejandro Balde at right-back.

But the manager wants to bring in an accomplished player in the position so that he can reinstate Kounde and Balde to their natural roles at centre-back and left-back, respectively.

A new midfielder, like breakout World Cup star Azzedine Ounahi, is also being sought to add more depth and quality in the area.

However, as things stand, the club are in no position to bring in new faces and will need to make some major tweaks if they are to generate Fair Play margin and sign players in the winter, as confirmed by president Joan Laporta.

So, Xavi is operating under the idea that Barcelona will not be making any fresh inroads into the market this winter. Player sales or salary reductions could help the Catalans in their bid to sign players. But, at the moment though, the manager is not expecting any incomings.
