With Sergio Busquets in the final year of his contract at Barcelona, there have been constant speculations over his future at Spotify Camp Nou.
The 34-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to MLS club Inter Miami, while some outlets continue to insist that manager Xavi Hernandez is hoping to convince him to remain at the club for one more season.
With Spain now getting eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2022, the time to make a decision is nearing for Busquets, as the Blaugrana would want enough notice to put in a succession plan in place for the midfielder or continue with him in the scheme of things.
In case Busquets continues to lean towards an exit, Xavi has identified Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad as his ideal choice to take over from the Barcelona captain.
However, according to SPORT, Barça are reluctant to meet the 23-year-old’s €60 million release clause and will look to see if there is any room to negotiate on the valuation with La Real.
Zubimendi has gone about slowly establishing himself as one of the more reliable holding midfielders in La Liga and has become a permanent fixture in Imanol Alguacil’s side. Sociedad even extended his contract recently, tying him down to the club until 2027.
However, the Basque club did not increase Zubimendi’s release clause amount which still stands at €60 million. But, the Blaugrana, plagued by financial issues, do not intend to match that figure and will look to try and negotiate a lower fee.
Any move would depend on Busquets and his decision over his future. Barça understand that he has earned the right to decide his next course of action after years of service to the club. And it remains to be seen whether the club captain opts to renew or moves on in the summer
