Barcelona have set their sights on Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli and are tracking his progress at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, reports SPORT.
Martinelli is a player that has been on Barça’s radars for years now, with the club having had a chance to sign him in the past. While they passed up on the opportunity back then, the Catalans have now rekindled their interest in the 21-year-old.
The report indicates that the Blaugrana have been following Martinelli closely throughout this season and at the World Cup and have very good reports on the Brazilian ace.
Martinelli has emerged as one of the main protagonists for Arsenal this season as they sit atop the Premier League table. In 14 league appearances, he has scored five goals and set up two more.
He has not received prominent game-time with Brazil at the World Cup, though, playing just 111 minutes of football in Qatar
Barcelona, though, are said to be impressed by Martinelli as he is a player who can play in multiple positions in the attacking unit. With Memphis Depay expected to leave soon, a replacement could be sought and the young Arsenal ace is seen as a market opportunity for the summer.
Martinelli’s current contract with Arsenal expires in 2024, meaning he will enter the final year of his deal with the club in the summer. Talks are said to be ongoing over a potential four-year deal, and the player has admitted to be comfortable in London, but an agreement is yet to be finalised.
And, Barcelona closely monitor the situation in the hope to swoop in if things do not change with regard to the Brazilian’s contract as they believe they could be in a position to sign him for a low cost in such a scenario.
