Barcelona defender to return to club on Monday or Tuesday following World Cup exit

Uruguay were one of the teams to have a surprising exit from the World Cup group stages, thanks to South Korea’s surprise win over Portugal. The South American giants ended third in group H, behind South Korea and Portugal.

Uruguay’s exit, though, could serve as a blessing for Barcelona as one of their star defenders Ronald Araujo is now set to return to Camp Nou, reports Mundo Deportivo.

Araujo, who had picked up a thigh injury earlier in the season, was called up to the Uruguay team even though he had not recovered from the injury. He was accompanied by a couple of Barça physios, who kept close track of his fitness.

Uruguay had reportedly promised Barcelona to not field Araujo in the group stages. Although the promise was kept, there was tension between the two camps after it was revealed that the national team was speeding up the recovery process of the defender.

But with Uruguay facing early elimination, Araujo will return to the Barcelona camp and continue his recovery either on Monday or Tuesday

The report suggests Barcelona are looking to have Araujo available for the derby game against Espanyol at the end of the month. His absence, after all, has caused major hiccups in the defensive unit for Barça, even leading to the early elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

Although Barcelona are doing well in La Liga, the return of Araujo could go a long way in helping them further solidify their defence as the Catalans brace themselves for the second half of the season.

Araujo’s last appearance on the pitch came in mid-September, in a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Elche. Barcelona are hoping to have him back at the camp between Monday and Tuesday, following which they aim to have him ready for action against Espanyol.
