Barcelona target has €120 million release clause, current club uninterested in sale – Romano

Enzo Fernandez has shot into the limelight following his performances for Argentina in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, including an extraordinary goal in the win over Mexico.

In addition to his performances in the World Cup, the youngster has also performed admirably for his club SL Benfica. And in light of his success, he has become one of the most in-demand players in South America, with Barcelona among the clubs keen on securing his services.

However, according to a fresh report from Fabrizio Romano, SL Benfica plan to pour water over Barça’s plans to sign Fernandez.

The Portuguese giants, who had signed the youngster during the summer transfer window, have no desire to offload the player in the upcoming January transfer window. They have signed the player only recently and do not want to get rid of him just yet.

A central midfielder by trade, Fernandez was one of South America’s brightest talents when he joined Benfica to River Plate. Since then, he has racked up 24 competitive appearances for the club, becoming an essential figure in the second line of press.

The 21-year-old’s quality has become evident in his performances in the World Cup. They have not gone unnoticed either, with a host of European giants reportedly keen on his services. But Benfica are not willing to give him up yet.

Romano reveals that Fernandez’s contract with Benfica has a release clause worth €120 million, which is a fortune for any club across Europe, including Barcelona.

In addition, River Plate hold a certain percentage over his sale, meaning SL Benfica could be forced to further inflate Fernandez’s price. It could effectively rule Barça out of the chase, at least for the upcoming January transfer window.
