Official: Frenkie de Jong starts for Netherlands vs Ecuador, Memphis on bench

Following Qatar’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup, the onus is on Netherlands to send the group to a final matchday qualifier between Ecuador and Senegal. Before that, though, they must combat the former at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Frenkie de Jong was one of the best performers for the Dutch side as they registered a 2-0 win over Senegal in the first game. He assisted Cody Gakpo’s winner in the 84th minute, and has retained his place in defensive midfield today.

FdJ starts alongside Atalanta ace Teun Koopmeiners, while Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind flank them as the right and left-wingback, respectively.

Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake continue as two of the three centre-backs, but Matthijs de Ligt has been replaced by Jurrien Timber as the third piece of the puzzle. Andries Noppert starts in goal.

It seems Memphis Depay has not fully recovered from his injury yet, as he starts a second successive game on the bench. Gakpo and Steven Bergwijn take their place as twin strikers, with Davy Klaassen as the no. 10 behind them.
