With just a few days left before Spain kickstart their 2022 World Cup campaign against Costa Rica, star midfielder Pedri spoke to the media, offering his thoughts on the World Cup and the injury of Karim Benzema.

The Barcelona starlet also voiced his desire to play against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, preferably in the final.

When asked about an opponent he would like to face in the final, Pedri replied, as quoted by EFE, “Messi’s Argentina. I would like a Spain – Argentina final at the World Cup. I want to play against Leo, I have never played against him. It would be great.”

Pedri went on to heap praise on Messi, revealing the advice he used to give to the players on the pitch. “Messi used to give us advice on how to be calm during matches. He always told us to feel free on the pitch,” he said.

“Leo Messi is the best player I have ever seen. To have had the chance to play with him is an honour. He always had a great attitude towards me and treated me very well from the moment I met him,” he added.

Pedri played with Messi during his breakthrough campaign in the 2020/21 season. Although he had only featured in 12 league matches during the corresponding season, he had the fortune of appearing alongside the Argentine in several of those matches.

Pedri has since become an undisputed star in the Barcelona side and may even play a starring role for Spain in the World Cup. But the youngster feels pity for France and the football fans for the recent injury of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.

“Benzema is a world-class player with a lot of quality, especially off the ball. Very few players can do what he does. It’s a blow for football fans that a player like him will miss the World Cup,” he said when asked about the Frenchman’s injury
