Barcelona set to be attentive to Chelsea target’s exploits during the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar will begin in a little over 24 hours as 32 nations go head to head to be crowned the champions of the world.

Each World Cup sees the emergence of some footballers who take the tournament by a storm which in turn helps them earn a big move to a top club in the transfer windows that follow.

So, it is not surprising for teams to keep a close watch on the quadrennial competition as they look to add quality players to their roster. And Barcelona are no different as they are set to closely follow the tournament in Qatar.

Indeed, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that the Blaugrana have already earmarked several players who they will closely track at the World Cup, with the list including the name of AC Milan and Portugal forward Rafael Leao.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an explosive past couple of years with the Rossoneri, as he played an integral role in their Serie A title triumph last season and has been performing at a high level this time out as well.

In 20 matches across all competitions, Leao has already netted seven goals and set up nine more for his teammates.

Having made his debut for the Portugal national team just over a year ago, he has 11 caps for A Selecao and will be looking to score his maiden goal for them at the World Cup.

And, the report now indicates that Barcelona will be attentive to how the 24-year-old, who is also on the radars of Premier League giants Chelsea, will fare at the event in Qatar.

Leao’s contract with Milan expires in 2024 and an agreement over a renewal is yet to be agreed upon. The forward’s father recently indicated that clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea were in the mix while talking about his future.

A strong run in the World Cup could convince Barça to firm up their interest in Leao, especially with Memphis Depay tipped to leave at the club in the near future.
