Barcelona are set to embark on an early season hiatus in light of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The break should give Xavi Hernandez ample time to rethink his approach and get his ideas across to the rest of the team. Barça are also expected to remain active in the transfer market, in their bid to further strengthen their squad ahead of the January transfer window.
According to Cadena SER, Barcelona have already identified the right-back area as a weak point and it appears Xavi has prioritised the signing of a new right-sided full-back in the winter transfer window.
Xavi’s desire to sign a new right-back comes in the midst of Hector Bellerin’s struggles at Barcelona since joining the club in the summer. The former Arsenal star had returned to Catalonia on transfer deadline day, in what seemed like a good deal at the time.
However, a few months into the season, Bellerin has been unfortunate with injuries and is not considered important in Xavi’s setup. As such, he could leave the club for free when his contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season.
In addition to Bellerin’s woes, Barcelona have had not had much luck with Sergi Roberto’s injury woes while Ronald Araujo picked up a nasty injury during the international break, thus accentuating the need for a new right-back.
Barcelona are expected to keep an eye on more players in the January transfer window, but signing a new right-back would be the absolute priority.
As per recent reports, the club have already identified former La Masia talent Arnau Martinez as a potential target, though the likes of Diogo Dalot and Wilfried Singo are other alternatives.
