Xavi congratulated Barcelona starlet on his performance against Bayern Munich

Barcelona’s recent defeat to Bayern Munich came as a bitter blow just hours after their elimination from the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the second season running had been confirmed

In a game that ended 3-0 for Bayern, it was not the best of nights for Barcelona players, who struggled to impose their authority on the pitch.

However, Alejandro Balde was one of the bright sparks in an otherwise dire performance from Barça. Starting at left-back, the youngster put in a disciplined and organised effort out wide.

He dealt with the pressure of Noussair Mazraoui and Serge Gnabry, containing their threat for the most part of the game, while also trying to get forward. Although he was not able to make a major impact, his efforts and work ethic out wide did impress Xavi, reports Javi Miguel.

The journalist suggests the Barcelona coach congratulated Balde on his performance against Bayern Munich after the game. It is further claimed that the performance reiterated that the 18-year-old is the first-choice left-back ahead of Jordi Alba and Marcos Alonso.

Balde’s performance on the night serves as a promising prospect for Barça, who have been quite unlucky with the poor form of their veteran stars such as Alba. The left-back is, in fact, one of the candidates to be offloaded in the upcoming January transfer window.

Although getting rid of the Spanish fullback is going to be a tough ask, Balde’s presence in the team could be critical in the club’s bid to slowly move on from the veteran star in the coming years.

The 18-year-old’s progress has seen him emerge as a contender for a spot in Spain’s squad for the FIFA World Cup, while a new contract is also believed to be on the horizon for the La Masia graduate.
