Even though the 2022 summer transfer window is still not over, Barcelona are already sketching out plans for the next year.
At the top of the to-do list for the Blaugrana next season will be signing a new long-term replacement for captain Sergio Busquets, whose contract expires in 2023. They already have their sights set on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as an option.
Along with that, another major priority for Barcelona for the summer of next year, as things stand, seems to be the re-signing of club legend and former captain Lionel Messi.
The 35-year-old superstar was shockingly let go of by the Blaugrana last summer as they could not renew his contract. He signed for PSG, inking a two-year contract with the French capital club that stands to expire next summer.
And, Barça have their sights firmly fixed on bringing Messi back to Camp Nou sooner or later no matter what, reports Alfredo Martinez on Diario SPORT.
The Argentina captain had a slow start to life in France but is slowly back into his groove and has helped the club to multiple trophies already. With his contract expiring next year, talks about his future are certain to dominate the headlines.
PSG, for their part, wish to extend his contract beyond 2023 while Barcelona plan to re-sign him and let the superstar end his career with the club on his own terms.
Messi is not thinking about his future at the moment as he is currently focused on the season with PSG and the World Cup in Qatar. Any decision on his future will only be taken once the tournament is over at the end of the year.
The relationship between Barcelona and Messi had strained following his exit last summer, but president Joan Laporta is keen on repairing the situation so that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner can return to the club for one last hurrah.
Whether such a move materialises remains to be seen. For now, though, Messi is not thinking about his future while Barcelona are understood to be calm about the situation.
