Barcelona’s hopes of signing Bernardo Silva from Manchester City this summer have been dashed as reports earlier on Wednesday indicated that the 28-year-old had decided to stay put at the Etihad.
Silva has been one of Xavi and Barcelona’s topmost transfer targets and the club were harbouring hopes of landing him before the transfer window closed. The Portuguese midfielder was also believed to be keen on a move to Camp Nou.
However, with not much time left in the window and no concrete proposals tabled yet, Silva decided to choose stability over uncertainty and continue at Man City. The Premier League champions have decided that they will no longer listen to any offers to their star man, effectively ending Barça’s pursuit of him.
But, a fresh report from La Porteria now claims that while Silva might have decided to continue in England for this season, he still remains intent on joining Barcelona next year.
The report states that the former AS Monaco ace has informed his teammates and club staff about his decision to continue at City this season. His agent, Jorge Mendes, will also formally communicate the same to Man City officials imminently.
However, that has not changed his desire to play for Barcelona and Silva plans to leave the Citizens to play for the Blaugrana in the summer transfer window of 2023.
The report states that Barça’s sporting project, coupled with the chance of being closer to his family, are the driving forces behind the 28-year-old Portuguese star’s desire to join the La Liga giants.
Manchester City were demanding a massive €100 million transfer fee for Silva this summer. Given that he will still have two years left on his contract in 2023, they would not be under any pressure to lower their asking price.
Having failed to sign him last summer and in the current window, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona are third time lucky in their pursuit of Silva come the summer of 2023.
