In a major blow to Barcelona’s transfer aspirations, top target Bernardo Silva is likely to stay put at Manchester City beyond the summer window, reports The Athletic.
The 28-year-old has been Barça’s top target this summer to reinforce their midfield, so much so that they are prepared to push Frenkie de Jong out of the club to make room for his arrival.
Silva, for his part, had his head turned and wanted a move to Barcelona, just like he did last summer. The Portuguese midfielder is believed to have asked the Premier League champions to sanction an exit should a suitable offer be made for him.
Barcelona, for all their interest in Silva, have not made an official proposal for his services as of yet. And Man City are unwilling to budge from their asking price of €100 million for their prized asset.
Given Barça’s current financial situation, it would be extremely difficult for them to match that asking price unless they were to offload de Jong, who is hell-bent on staying put at Camp Nou.
And, just like last year, Silva is now ready to commit his future to Manchester City instead of spending the final two weeks of the window mired in uncertainty
Having put behind the speculations over his future, the 28-year-old went on to star for City in the 2021/22 campaign and was named in the PFA Team of the Year. And the Premier League champions will be hoping for a repeat of those performances from Silva in the new season.
The midfielder’s gesture to the fans after City’s win over Bournemouth at the Etihad and his message on social media following that, led fans to presume that he might be headed for the exit doors.
But, as per the latest update, Silva will be a Manchester City player for the rest of the season unless something drastic happens between now and September 1. This will come as a huge boost for Pep Guardiola and the Cityzens while Barça will see it as a blow to their ambitions.
