Argentine defender’s agent holds meeting with Barcelona director amid transfer links

With Barcelona in the market for a new right-back, Villarreal’s Argentine defender Juan Foyth has emerged as one of the targets under consideration at Camp Nou.

The 24-year-old joined the Yellow Submarine from Tottenham Hotspur in 2020, initially on loan. He played a key role in their UEFA Europa League triumph in the 2020/21 campaign, following which his signing was made permanent.

Foyth essayed a key role again last season as Unai Emery’s side progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League. His performances and exposure to La Liga football have made the Argentine a target for Barcelona.

With Sergino Dest out of favour under Xavi Hernandez, the 24-year-old Foyth is seen as a viable option for the right-back slot at Camp Nou. And it seems like Barcelona are already stepping up the ante in their pursuit of the ex-Tottenham ace.

According to journalist Gerard Romero, Foyth’s agent Claudio Curti held a meeting with Barcelona director Mateu Alemany and has been spotted leaving the club’s Ciutat Esportiva complex a while ago.

While Foyth might not be the flashiest of names around, he has proven to be a solid performer in his two years with Villarreal. However, whether he would be suited to Xavi’s system at Barça remains the big question.

Apart from Foyth, the Catalan giants are also said to be looking at Borussia Dortmund Thomas Meunier. Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot had also been linked, although those rumours have died down quite swiftly.

Foyth and Meunier seem to be the two favourable candidates that the Blaugrana are looking at. And the meeting with the former’s candidate indicates that the club are prepared to take their interest in him a step further.

However, with the Argentine’s contract at Villarreal running until 2026, he could command a sizable transfer fee in comparison to Meunier, who could be available for just €10 million.
