REPORT: Barcelona considering letting Frenkie de Jong continue at the club

For the better part of the off-season, Frenkie de Jong’s name has been dragged through the mud by the Barcelona administration. His contract has been leaked, his renewal deemed illegal, and the club has tried their best to push him out.

Manchester United have been the favourites to sign him, having already reached an €85 million agreement with Barcelona. Chelsea, too, seem confident of their €80 million-plus offer, but both clubs are yet to convince the Dutchman.

Barcelona are on the verge of giving up on his possible exit, and are considering letting him continue at the club, as per Alex Pintanel.

This comes on the back of his promising performance in pre-season against Pumas UNAM, and followed that up with a lovely cameo against Rayo Vallecano in the season-opener. He was Barcelona’s select few players who performed well.

It had been reported, time and again, that the reason why Barcelona want to sell de Jong was multi-faceted. Xavi was unimpressed with his performances on the pitch, deeming Bernardo Silva a better fit for his system.

And also, his renewal in 2020 promised him a €30 million salary this season, which the new administration deemed extremely excessive. With a new wage cap set, de Jong’s salary did not fall in line with the rest of the players, causing problems to their already ruined financial setup.

As it stands, it seems inevitable that the Dutchman will continue at Barcelona next season, and the board and fans alike, will hope he can produce his best season.
