Sergino Dest is staring at an uncertain future at Barcelona, despite his desire to continue at Camp Nou. The 21-year-old has been at the club for two years but has failed to nail down a regular berth in the side.
With Barça plotting to sign Cesar Azpilicueta, they have decided to offload Dest this summer and are looking for a fee of around €20 million for the USMNT international.
And now SPORT is reporting that Manchester United have shown an interest in Dest and would be willing to meet the asking price for the young right-back.
Manchester United are already in talks with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong and could now start negotiating a possible move for Dest as well. The Red Devils’ manager Erik ten Hag knows the right-back well, having worked with him at Ajax and rates him highly.
Manchester United are likely to part ways with Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer. And with Diogo Dalot failing to impress consistently, they are on the lookout for a new right-back and Dest could end up being the solution.
The 21-year-old, despite his failure to establish himself in Catalonia, remains highly rated in footballing circles and had attracted the interest of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, among others last year.
Dest has constantly maintained that he does now want to leave Barcelona. However, his game-time would take a massive hit if Azpilicueta arrives, which would force him to consider an exit. And a chance to reunite with ten Hag at Manchester United could appeal to the youngster.
Since joining Barcelona from Ajax in 2020, Dest has made 72 appearances in which he has tallied three goals and four assists. With the club keen on offloading him, an exit appears to be on the cards for the USMNT ace, and a transfer to the Premier League could very well materialise.
