FC Barcelona are currently looking to offload several unwanted players in the first team, in their plans to cut down the costs and register the new signings ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
Thanks to the addition of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, Memphis Depay has emerged as an outcast at Camp Nou, with Xavi reportedly informing the player of his lack of prominence in the side going into the new season.
Depay has been asked to leave the club as well, as his current contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of next season. It means Barça could see him leave for free in 2023 if they fail to sanction his sale in the summer.
According to a report from Relevo, that is exactly what the Dutchman is considering. He is open to the idea of prolonging his stay at Camp Nou, especially knowing he may get better offers from several European giants, due to his status as a free agent.
A prolonged stay for Depay might not bode well for Barcelona. The club are in desperate need of reducing the wage bill, especially as they look to get rid of their financial deficit.
Relieving themselves of Depay’s salary, to that end, could be of great help. However, on the flip side, the Dutchman’s prolonged stay at the club may prove to be beneficial, in regards to the overall depth of the team.
Although Robert Lewandowski has not historically suffered any major injuries for most of his career, Barcelona still require a goalscoring alternative, especially amid the uncertainty of the future of Martin Braithwaite.
But as things stand, Barcelona may have a tough task on their hands in their quest to get rid of Memphis Depay this summer. The Dutchman remains a target for Juventus, but the Bianconeri are prioritising a move for Atletico Madrid superstar Alvaro Morata
