Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona on a free transfer in 2021 left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouths. While Joan Laporta was not responsible for it directly, his statements during his campaign instilled belief in everyone that Leo would end up staying.
The rumours of his return, as everyone expected, have caught up with Barcelona fans. And Laporta has fueled them by confirming that he does, in fact, want to bring back Messi to the club.
He gave a huge update on the situation, speaking to CBS Sports Golazo, suggesting that he did what he had to do, and that he was left with no choice.
“I did what had to be done, put the club above the best player in history. I’ve known Messi since he was a child. I love Leo. Barça loves Leo. If you ask me, how do I feel? I think we owe it to Messi (to bring him back).”
“I will do everything in my power to ensure Messi has the best end to his career, in a Barcelona shirt. With the applause of the crowd,” Laporta added.
There were reports earlier this year that Messi’s relationship with Laporta no longer existed because of the way he had to leave. When asked whether he had spoken to Messi about this idea, the Barcelona president said:
This is just an idea that we have at the moment, and I will do everything in my power to make it happen. This is what I can say now.”
“It will not be easy, but I believe it is possible with the right plan and strategy.”
Naturally, there were some obvious follow-ups. The first one being whether the idea was to bring him immediately, as part of this summer window, or next season, post-World Cup.
“Once again, it is a wish that we have, and we want to make it come true through a specific plan. We want him back to wear the Barcelona shirt because the club loves Leo, and the fans love Leo. I love him, too, and will try my best.”
