The addition of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this month, coupled with the contract extension of Ousmane Demebele is set to have a massive impact on Barcelona’s squad planning ahead of the new season.
A host of players are facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with Memphis Depay likely to be one of them.
According to a report from Diario AS, Xavi has held talks with the Dutchman during the ongoing pre-season tour in the US. He has asked the player to leave Camp Nou in the summer or spend the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign sulking on the bench.
Xavi was quite frank with Depay as he explained to him his diminished role in the side following the arrival of Lewandowski and Raphinha.
In light of the revelation, Barcelona are open to listening to offers for Depay this summer. They are expecting a figure of around €20 million, but they could appear flexible, knowing the attacker’s contract expires at the end of next season.
It essentially means Depay could leave for free in 2023, which is something Barcelona want to avoid. Sanctioning the Dutchman’s sale this month can not only help the club generate transfer revenue but also cut down a fraction of their wage bill.
It would ultimately come in handy in helping them register the new signings, including Lewandowski and Raphinha. Moreover, Depay’s departure could pave the way for Lewandowski to take up the number nine shirt, which is even a part of his contract with Barcelona.
Premier League clubs have expressed the desire to sign Depay in the summer, though the Dutchman has reportedly rejected a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United have emerged as the latest club to consider a move for the former Lyon starlet, although whether or not the striker wants to return to Old Trafford remains to be seen.
